Boundaries tend to be tested in December – expectations rise, schedules tighten, and people begin leaning on one another more heavily.
But boundaries aren’t barriers. They’re bridges to healthier relationships, emotional clarity, and genuine connection.
Start with Inner Honesty
Ask yourself:
- What drains me during the holidays?
- What genuinely brings me joy?
- Where do I feel obligated rather than willing?
- What do I actually have the capacity for?
Say ‘No” with Kindness, Not Justification
You don’t need a detailed explanation for prioritising your wellbeing.
Try:
- “I won’t be joining this year, but I hope it’s lovely.”
- “I can help with one thing, not everything.”
- “That doesn’t work for me, but here’s what I can do.”
You’re allowed to choose what aligns with your energy.
Protect Your Nervous System
Holidays can be overstimulating.
Give yourself permission to:
- leave early
- take breaks
- step outside for air
- stay home when needed
- keep you plans simple
Your wellbeing matters just as much as everyone else’s.
Expect Resistance – Don’t Internalise It
Some people may push back when you set boundaries, especially if they’re used to you being the fixer or helper.
Their discomfort isn’t a sign that you’re wrong.
It’s a sign that you’re changing the pattern.
Make Space for What Truly Nourishes You
Boundaries aren’t about shutting things out – they’re about making room for:
- peace
- connection
- rest
- authenticity
- joy
You can show up more fully for others when you are rooted in yourself.
